Covid-19 and Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment

Long-COVID is a syndrome termed as any individual suffering from the signs and symptoms that develop during or following an infection consistent with COVID-19, continuing for more than 12 weeks and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis.

Long Covid Syndrome

COVID-19 infection can induce a cytokine storm – an aggressive systemic inflammatory response. This cytokine storm is correlated with lung injury and another unfavourable prognosis. COVID-19 can cause neuro-inflammation which is the cause of local hypoxia (lack of oxygen).

According to Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School “the hidden long-term cognitive effects of COVID-19 include neurological symptoms, impaired cognition, behaviour and psychological problems.

HBO has been shown to help ameliorate both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Studies suggest that HBO has the ability to reverse hypoxia, reduce neuro-inflammation and improve tissue oxygenation. HBO is a potent virucidal, meaning it has the ability to kill COVID-19 viral cells. HBO has been shown to reduce coagulation factors to effectively address the increased clotting that COVID can create.

Common symptoms of Long COVID-19  may include a combination of the following:

Headaches
Encephalopathy
Dizziness
Fatigue

Difficulty Breathing
Joint Pain
Chest Pain
Brain Fog

Loss of taste/smell
Insomnia
Myalgia
Dysgeusia

Study: Atherosclerosis & Inflammation Attenuated with HBOT

Conclusion:The virus has created an unprecedented challenge for our healthcare system, has overrun our hospitals and has caused an alarmingly high mortality rate within critical care facilities. As Science is catching up to this novel virus, early clinical reports and anatomical findings show progressive hypoxemia as the main cause of deterioration in patients with Covid-19. As hypoxemia progresses, “standard therapy cannot penetrate the diffusion barriers in the lungs because they are limited by ambient pressure.” Preliminary evidence is showing HBOT is not limited by these barriers and may improve these patient’s conditions, especially if intervention happens at early stages.
