Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Migraines

A migraine is a type of headache that is characterised by severe pain, often on one side of the head, and is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours to several days. Migraines are caused by changes in the blood vessels in the brain and surrounding areas.

These changes can cause the blood vessels to constrict (narrow), which can lead to a lack of oxygen and nutrients to the brain. They can then dilate (expand) rapidly, leading to inflammation and pain. The exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

There are different types of migraines, the most common are:

  • Migraine without Aura: This is the most common type of migraine, characterised by moderate to severe headaches that can last from 4 to 72 hours.

  • Migraine with Aura: This type of migraine is characterised by a visual or neurological disturbance that occurs before or during the headache. These disturbances can include flashing lights, blind spots, or tingling in the face or hands.
