Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment for Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long-term illness with a wide range of symptoms. The most common symptom is extreme tiredness. Chronic fatigue syndrome can affect anyone, including children.

The main symptom is feeling extremely tired and generally unwell. In addition, people may have other symptoms including:

  • sleep problems

  • Muscle or joint pain

  • Headaches

  • A sore throat

  • Problems thinking, remembering or concentrating

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Feeling dizzy or sick

  • Fast or irregular heartbeats

Most people find overexerting makes their symptoms worse. The severity of symptoms can vary from day to day, or even within a day.

There is not a specific test for chronic fatigue, so it’s diagnosed based on the symptoms and by ruling out other conditions that could be causing symptoms.

Although it is not known exactly what causes chronic fatigue, there are a number of theories – for example, it may be triggered by an infection, or certain factors could make you more likely to develop the illness

  • Viral infections, such as glandular fever

  • Bacterial infections, such as pneumonia

  • Problems with the immune system

  • A hormone imbalance

  • Mental health problems, such as stress and emotional trauma

  • Your genes

Hyperbaric Oxygen And Chronic Fatigue

  • In a study designed to analyse the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the management of chronic fatigue syndrome, sixteen patients who had been diagnosed according to the Fukuda criteria received 15 treatment sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy over a period of three consecutive weeks (five days per week). The outcome measures such as Fatigue Quality of Life Score were assessed before and after the fifteen sessions.

  • After hyperbaric oxygen, the patients’ scores were found to have improved with respect to all outcome measures. The group concluded that hyperbaric oxygen decreases the severity of symptoms and increases the quality of chronic fatigue patients. It is suggested that it could be a new treatment modality for the management of chronic fatigue.
