How mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) works and why it’s good for our children

Children on the autistic spectrum experience improvement in a wide range of their symptoms with mHBOT treatments, including increased language ability, better socialisation, less aggression, improved bowel function and better cognition.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication.

  • Autism is a developmental disorder characterised by difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behaviour.

  • Parents often notice signs during the first three years of their child’s life. These signs often develop gradually, though some autistic children experience regression in their communication and social skills after reaching developmental milestones at a normal pace.

Benefits Of Hyperbaric Oxygen On ADHD And Autism

It is important to note that many of the clinical studies which prove the beneficial effects of hyperbaric oxygen for autism overlap into ADHD and vice versa. In addition, there have been incremental improvements reported by parents using HBO as an adjuvant modality to help their child with autism or ADHD.

  • In a pilot study, it was found that hyperbaric oxygen can significantly improve cognitive performance in healthy older adults. Key areas of improvement following the therapy included:
    • Attention and focus
    • Information processing speed
    • Cognitive function tests

  • In any person, these abilities tend to decline with age. The study found that HBO significantly boosted cognitive performance by improving cerebral blood flow in specific brain locations.

  • This study is the first glimmer of hope regarding HBO for autism. The reason is that there are significant overlaps between old-age related symptoms (decline in cognitive and motor skills) and the symptoms of autism in children and adults.

  • In several studies, researchers mention neuro-inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress in the brain of children with autism as the principle explanations behind the potential of HBO in managing the condition.
